D.R.E.A.M.S. Academy welcomed fourth- and fifth-grade students at Metropolitan Ministries’ Mango Elementary campus for a third and final month of immersive STEM programming. Designed specifically for older elementary students, Month 3 challenged participants to think more deeply, build more deliberately, and connect multiple disciplines together in meaningful ways.

Throughout the month, students explored how electricity powers the world around them, how engineering principles turn simple components into working machines, and how science and compassion intersect in biomedical innovation. Each day built on the last, guiding students from foundational concepts to real-world applications.

Electrical Engineering Week: Understanding the Power Behind Everything

Month 3 began with electrical engineering, introducing students to the fundamentals of electricity and how it flows through systems. Using Snap Circuits, students explored how electrical energy moves through open and closed circuits and learned why a complete path is required for electricity to function. They identified components such as power sources, switches, nodes, and loads, gaining a clearer understanding of how everyday devices work.

As students built and tested their circuits, they experimented with turning systems on and off, observing what happens when a circuit is broken or completed. The hands-on nature of the activity allowed students to see abstract concepts in action, transforming electricity from an invisible force into something they could control and understand. By the end of the week, students were confidently explaining how circuits function and how electrical engineering plays a role in technology they use every day.

Joy in Motion: Discovering How Electricity Comes to Life

Pure excitement lights up the moment when circuits come to life. As the fan spins and launches successfully, students look up in awe, discovering firsthand that electricity isn’t just something you learn about — it’s something you can feel and celebrate.

Exploring Sound, Space, and Curiosity Through Snap Circuits

With curiosity leading the way, students explore sound and space effects using Snap Circuits. Through experimentation and play, they discover how small changes in a circuit can create entirely new outcomes, turning exploration into understanding.

Engineering Curiosity Comes With Safety Lessons

Curiosity is at the heart of engineering, but learning how to explore safely matters just as much. Moments like this help students understand that innovation goes hand in hand with responsibility and awareness.

Focused Minds at Work: Students Collaborate Across Engineering Stations

From station to station, students engage deeply in their work, testing ideas, observing results, and learning from one another. This quiet focus reflects the heart of engineering — patience, collaboration, and the confidence to keep trying.

Problem-Solving in Action: A Student Explains Her Unique Way to Stop the Circuit

When a challenge arises, students don’t stop — they explain, adapt, and innovate. By sharing an unconventional way to stop the fan, this moment highlights how problem-solving is as much about thinking differently as it is about getting the “right” answer.

When Creativity Goes Off-Script: Engineering Beyond the Instructions

Not every great idea comes from following instructions exactly. By experimenting beyond the guide, students show how creativity and engineering work together, proving that innovation often begins when curiosity leads the way.

Mechanical Engineering Week: Designing Wobble Bots and Bringing Ideas to Life

The second week shifted from electrical theory to mechanical engineering, as students designed and built their very own wobble bots. Drawing directly from what they had learned about circuits, motors, and power flow, students applied electrical engineering concepts to real, moving machines.

Students worked through the process of wiring motors, connecting power sources, and testing how electrical energy translates into motion. They quickly learned that small changes in balance, wiring, or structure could dramatically affect how their robots moved. Alongside functionality, students were encouraged to express creativity, decorating and customizing their wobble bots while still maintaining structural integrity.

This week emphasized that engineering is both technical and artistic. Students saw firsthand how creativity and problem-solving go hand in hand, and how engineers must constantly test, adjust, and refine their designs. As wobble bots buzzed and shuffled across the classroom, students celebrated not just the finished product, but the process that brought their ideas to life.

Biomedical Engineering Week: Designing Prosthetics and Solving Problems

The final week of Month 3 brought all disciplines together through biomedical engineering, where students explored how engineering and medicine intersect to improve human lives. The lesson began with an exploration of the human hand, examining how bones, joints, tendons, and muscles work together to create movement. Students learned that even simple actions like gripping or lifting require complex coordination within the body.

Building on this understanding, students were challenged to design their own prosthetic arms. Using engineering principles learned throughout the month, they created functional models that mimicked basic hand movements. Students considered how design choices affect usability, strength, and comfort, gaining insight into the challenges biomedical engineers face when creating devices for real people.

This project highlighted the heart of D.R.E.A.M.S. Academy’s mission: combining science, engineering, and empathy. Students learned that engineering is not just about building machines, but about solving problems that matter and improving quality of life.
